Hello! To quote Charles Dickens in the opening line of his quasi-autobiography, David Copperfield, “Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.”

Fishing with my father in Scotland & telling tall tales again!

Indeed! I don’t intend to make this blog an autobiography but, along the way, I hope to share thoughts and ideas with you and, in the process, learn and experience things anew, for isn’t that what life should be about if we are to look back across the years at some point in the (hopefully distant) future and count it time well spent.

I’ll finish with some quotes from George Santayana, who had a habit of hitting the nail on the head, although there’s a case to argue on his view regarding the reality of history, and also worth remembering Churchill’s opinion that ‘history is written by victors’ when examining past events….

There is no cure for birth and death save to enjoy the interval.

History is a pack of lies about events that never happened told by people who weren’t there.

And most famously, the quote borrowed and augmented by Winston Churchill: “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it“.

In exploring, understanding and learning from history – which is a constant theme for me – this last quote resonates like a bell tolling deep into the night.
