The world is currently burning, drowning, and suffocating under a relentless assault of extreme weather, yet it remains far too easy to shrug off the infernos of North America and the sweltering heatwaves of Europe as mere blips on a radar. They are not blips. They are the opening drumbeats of a march toward a very different planet. When former leaders dismiss raging wildfires as "wilful negligence," visionaries like Mark Carney rightfully pivot the petulance into a battle cry for climate action.

The cold, hard data paints a grim picture: we are currently hurtling toward a global surface temperature surge of 2.1°C to 3.3°C by 2100 - and that’s a conservative estimate. Because our oceans act as a heat sink, land temperatures will soar even higher. We’ve already tasted this terrifying future: recent heatwaves delivered the hottest, most suffocatingly humid conditions ever recorded in Europe, leaving thousands of deaths in their wake.

Yet, the true horror isn't found in the global averages. It lives in the extremes.

While average numbers sound abstract, extreme spikes are what break ecosystems, trigger mass extinctions, and push human survival to the absolute brink. Beneath the surface, apocalyptic tipping points are already shifting:

• The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC): The planet's giant ocean conveyor belt is dangerously weakening.
• Glacial Collapse: The ominous Thwaites Glacier - aptly dubbed the Doomsday Glacier - is unravelling at an alarming pace.

As science writer Alison George ominously highlights in New Scientist, the fates of global mega-cities from New York to Manila hang by a thread. Should Thwaites disintegrate entirely, it could trigger the total collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet, unleashing a catastrophic three-meter surge in sea levels.

Imagine a world where the warnings have been ignored. Picture Venice swallowed completely by the tides, and every coastline on Earth violently redrawn.

This is the backdrop of my upcoming speculative novel (authored under the pen name Mitchell Glenn). Set in the year 2173, humanity navigates a radically reshaped civilization - one forged in the aftermath of climate collapse, nuclear conflict, the unchecked hubris of tech billionaires, and the dawn of fusion energy driven by a planetary, quantum-powered AI wired directly into human neural chips.

While our future faces a constellation of existential threats, unchecked climate change remains the catalyst - the single spark capable of setting every other domino in motion.

The Clock is Ticking

We are at a crossroads where political short-sightedness still echoes with chants of "drill, baby, drill" - a stance driven by deliberate ignorance, political apathy, or a chilling disregard for future generations. But the window to act hasn't completely slammed shut.

As Alison George concludes in her article about the glacier:

"We can still buy some time... It’s a question of slowing it down to a manageable pace, so that it’s a millennium before we see 2m of sea level rise, rather than a century... It’s terrible to think about."

It is terrible to think about. But it is far more terrible to ignore. If only those holding the levers of power possessed the courage to look beyond the precipice - and act before the fiction of 2173 becomes a reality.
